Synopsis
After causing a tragic accident, Kurt Lawson’s life free falls into despair and guilt and he believes that nothing can turn it around, until he finds Dakota, a Siberian husky who is much more than just any ordinary dog.
Late one night, three years ago, Kurt Lawson’s life changed forever. Caught up in a barroom brawl, he watched in horror as a man died in a fire ignited by his careless actions. That man was the brother of the woman he loved, Jenna Herbert. And that night was the beginning of a guilt-ridden slide into depression and regret that cut him off from the fulfilling life he had enjoyed. But now Jenna’s back in his life and it’s time to face his past or lose her forever.
Driving home late one night, with thoughts of Jenna once again on his mind, he suddenly glimpses a fierce fight between two stray dogs and a Siberian husky. Slamming his breaks and honking his horn, the dogs dart away as the light of his headlights break the night’s cover while the husky, whose legs are wobbling and bloody, collapses in front of Kurt. Pitying the animal, Kurt brings it home and feeds it, telling the dog how lucky it is to still be alive. Wondering how the dog ended up on that dark road fighting for its life, Kurt rhetorically asks the dog his name.
"My name is Dakota." And that's when Kurt begins his journey from darkness, down a road that can lead to redemption, if he is willing to travel it.
This character–driven story follows Kurt's healing relationship with Dakota as the dog strives to convince him to tell Jenna the truth about what happened to her brother. Dakota pushes Kurt towards the realization that he isn't actually responsible for Jenna's brother's death, and that it was just an accident, a tragic accident.
Will Kurt ever be healed? Will Jenna ever find out the truth about her brother’s death? Is Dakota really talking? Or is it all just in Kurt's mind? As the answers to these questions unfold, so too do the complex relationships between Jenna and the many characters that have taken a prominent place in her life during the three year period when Kurt locked himself away emotionally, all while Kurt struggles to become a part of Jenna’s life again.
